Newstead 'Treefest' Free Festival, Nottinghamshire
Newstead Treefest is a free festival focusing on music, arts, crafts, health and the environment held on the reclaimed Greenfield site, formerly the location of Newstead Colliery in Newstead Village, Notts. Treefest was initiated to encourage and enhance community spirit and involvement and aims to offer positive experiences through a range of mediums.
Newstead Treefest is now in its 7th year as an annual weekend festival for the local community and beyond. This FREE festival aims to offer something for everyone and cater for all ages and tastes.
We aim to recycle a high percentage of waste from Treefest. Please remember to bring cans not bottles!
The main attraction will be the music stage with a variety of bands playing throughout the weekend. There will be a mix of new talent and established local acts, many from Footprints Studio Nottingham. Headlining Acts are local funk band “Fat Digester” and Ska band “Rankin Steady” on the Saturday. On the Sunday headliners are “Vaccine” with their drum and bass and Russian rock act “Blast” return to Treefest as part of their UK tour for the release of their new album.
The Dance and Teenage Area will be open day and night with a variety of DJ styles and musical influences hosted by the Fayre Play Collective. County Youth Arts are providing a wide range of opportunities through skills based activities for the teenagers and young people throughout the weekend and Bandwagon will be bringing 'The Most' mobile studio where young people will be able to produce their own TV or radio style news reports.
The Environmental area will offer a tranquil escape and an opportunity to see local craftspeople at work. This area aims to increase awareness of Environmental issues, engage and involve young people in environmental activities through participatory workshops and displays. Activities will include Woodcarving, with this years project being a giant snail, Dreamcatcher workshops, Recycled Jewellery, a medical herbalist, a traditional pole lathe as well as a craft marquee, JUMP youth project displays and poetry readings. There will also be a platform for local pressure groups involved in environmental issues to share their views.
For those that want to completely wind down The Holistic Health Team will be offering a range of complementary therapies, including Reflexology, Indian Head Massage, Thai Yoga, Facials, aromatherapy, yoga class and a martial arts class provided by The Tao Academy.
On the Sunday there will be a full day of free dance workshops provided by Dance 4.
For the youngsters there is a large Children’s and Families area and to start the Festival off a carnival procession, which the children of Newstead Primary School have worked leading up to the event with assistance from Samba Wamba. This years theme is Healthy Eating, so watch out for giant apples with little legs sticking out from underneath. Endless activities in the Children’s area over the weekend include Dance and Drama, Pottery, Puppeteer’s, Theatre and Circus skills workshops to name a few. Bouncy slides and face painting will of course be available.
The Newstead Healthy Living Centre will also be offering health promotion and information in the Health Zone and promoting local health initiatives.
There will be craft and food stalls catering for all tastes and plenty of room to chill out and enjoy the Festival vibe.
For those that want to stay all weekend Camping is available at nearby Moseley Farm. For the thirsty, nearby Newstead Miners Welfare are also holding a Real Ale Festival over the weekend.
The most important aspect to the concept behind Treefest is that it is totally FREE!!!!!

Derby West Indian Carnival [Display and Show]
The streets were awash with colour and alive with music as hundreds of participants in the 19th Derby Carnival danced to the Market Place on Saturday.
More than 20 groups of dancers and costumed bands, some numbering more than 100, wound their way from Pear Tree Infant School, in Pear Tree Street, through the streets of Normanton and into the city centre.
Floats banged out music as hundreds more Derby residents lined the streets and gathered in the Market Place to join in the party atmosphere.
Groups came from as far away as Leeds and London to join in the celebrations.
The Derby West Indian Community Association, which organised the event, described it as the best ever. The parade, which saw groups dress up on the theme of exotic birds, was the first of two days of celebrations.
Organiser Tankyiwa Sankofa said: "We had more people than ever taking part and there were also more people watching and waiting for us by the time we reached the Market Place.
"The quality of the groups that we had were excellent. The music was brilliant and some of the costumes were just fantastic.
"Next year will be our 20th and I want us to build on this. The aim is that the whole city will be dancing. It should be one big party."
Among the groups taking part were the Scratch Street Dancers, based at the Mandela Centre, Pear Tree Road, Normanton.

Mat's Art 1 : Screaming Carrot Bakery, Forest Fields, Nottingham
Nottingham based Veggies Catering Campaign says welcome to Leanor and Andrew, who have taking on the running of this thriving all-vegan community-based business.
Weird name, weird place? Not according to manager of the Screaming Carrot, Jo Salter.
"I decided to give it that name because of the response from meat eaters, who, when being defensive about their ability to eat slaughtered animals retort:
"Well, vegetarians are just as bad - carrots scream when you pull them from the ground."
Mmm! perhaps they do, or perhaps it's just a theory invented by guilty meat eaters wrestling with their conscience.
"Attitudes to vegan food are changing..." says Jo, "...not just because less people want to eat meat but also because there are so many more allergies to dairy products, especially amongst children. There is a vegan substitute for everything now - we've even got vegan fishfingers!"
One of the best sellers is the tasty carrot cake - just screaming out to be eaten?

Nottingham Bomb Scare, Mansfield Road [getting togged up]
Luckily, it was another false alarm. But, this is now a feature of life in Britain, with everyone on such a 'short fuse' after the London Attacks. To see the military on our streets is still quite a shock to many of us that are more used to a civil society.
Roads blocked off at stort notice, worried looks on the publics face. There was a small explosion, with the distruction of a suspect package.
Roads opened again, life returns to normal. But at the back of everyones mind there is still much concern. There will be many more false alarms.

This is done on a set of boards at most events there. Then, they 'go over' the previous work at the next event. Temporary art?
